Monica Tong was born in Nanjing, China, and raised in Auckland, New Zealand. She spent 8 years in the finance industry in New Zealand and Australia before she turned to her passion for art and design. She studied and practiced as a multi-media artist in Los Angeles, United States, and currently lives in London, United Kingdom.

Out of all the art mediums, Monica has studied, she has found herself most directly fulfilled in clay as the act of creation takes her on a journey of self-discovery, including her identity, cultural influences, personal and social experiences. Her art bridges the past and present, East and West, and it often embraces the imperfectness and vulnerability of clay but also shows its meaningfulness and strength in its final form. Despite all the formal qualities that make a piece exciting, having pieces whose soul and uniqueness are capable of touching and inspiring those who encounter it is the ultimate purpose of her ceramic art. The cultural influence and identity of a 1.5 generation Kiwi-Asian can be found in many of her artworks, with her own interpretation. People who view her works may find her inner voice and a sense of groundedness.
